There are a couple of ways that you can get to Maria Island, Tasmania, and that is by boat or by plane. The Maria Island Guided Walk offers both options on their tours and may I say, the flight option is amazing.

The 1 hour flight tracks over historic Port Arthur then south to Tasman Island before heading north up Tasmania's East Coast along an amazing coastline of gleaming sandy beaches, dolerite cliffs and sea stacks.

Tasman Island, Tasmania

A fly over of Maria Island reveals the route that the Maria Island Guided Walk will take us over the next 4 days.

Darlington Airfield

Another perfect landing on the northern tip of Maria Island, and then we are off on our 4 day adventure.

Darlington, the main settlement of Maria Island, was once a Probation Station that was established in 1825.

Many of the original buildings still remain and they have been fully restored, including the Penitentiary Cells, which have been turned into public accommodation. We will be staying there on our last night of the tour.

The tour breezes through Darlington, then heads south towards the Painted Cliffs. The patterns in the sandstone cliffs here are truly amazing. Our guides take us to some hidden gems that are really seen!

Painted Cliffs, Maria Island

There are surprises around every corner on our walk, pristine beaches, wombats for miles, gangs of Yellow Tail Black Cockatoos overhead and the smells of the forests and ocean.

French's Farmhouse Circa 1930

French's Farm was our base camp for 2 nights and the evenings were fantastic. We watched grazing wombats and wallaby's while we enjoyed a few fine Tasmanian wines.

Day 2 has a couple of walking options, and due to the perfect weather, the guides decided to take us to Haunted Bay, which is as far south that the walking track can take us.

Haunted Bay

Haunted Bay is amazing! It's a fair walk to get there but you are rewarded by fantastic views and the feeling of remoteness. The bay is the home to nesting Little Penguins and it was once a shore based whaling station in the early 1800's.

Our guides whipped up a fantastic picnic lunch, then we retraced our footsteps back to French's Farm.

Summit view from Mount Maria 710m

On day 3 we headed back to Darlington via the "Inland Track". Those of us that had a bit more petrol in the tank, elected to walk to the summit of Mount Maria, which gave us stunning views over most of the island and westwards towards mainland Tasmania.

Back at Darlington we were immersed in the history of the island. The probation station has been restored to its former glory and we got sleep comfortably in the converted Penitentiary Cells that once interned over 600 convicts.

Darlington Probation Station

On day 4 our guides took us on an amazing exploration around the northern part of Maria Island. We poked our heads into numerous historical buildings and we had some incredible vistas.

These fifteen Tasmanian Devils set off for Maria Island in an effort to save their species from extinction and against the odds, we are pleased to say to date, that they are thriving and breeding well.

Numbers today are estimated to be around 85 - 90 Devils.

The initial release area was in the middle of the island at French's Farm and only after a couple of months motion cameras and radio collars recorded the Devils as being widespread throughout the island.

Maria Island has a total area of 115km2 and lies 4km off Tasmania's East Coast. The Tasmanian Devil can run up to 13km/h and covers an average distance of 8.6km every night.

Due to the widespread distribution of the Tasmanian Devil on Maria Island you are likely to see a Devil on The Maria Island Guided Walk. This 4 day walk covers the length and breadth of Maria Island and you will commonly see the Tasmanian Devil in it's natural habitat.

Tasmanian Devils are listed as vulnerable, but with a captive breeding program such as this one on Maria Island, it will help to protect the species.Tasmanian Hikes Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07219297442563609471noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6556382222052092274.post-88396966470239111592015-05-05T16:04:00.001-07:002015-05-05T16:04:48.469-07:00The Outback MasterchefThe 2015 season of Masterchef premiered on TV yesterday and it had me licking my lips all night. There were some awesome dishes that wowed the judges, and some that didn't.

Are YOU a good cook? When you are out in the outdoors, what do you cook? I'm not talking BBQ's, anyone can flip a steak, I'm talking about meals on the trail, somewhere remote!

It's probably easier for you to purchase off the shelf products, namely dehydrated or freeze dry meals, just add water and your done, or do you make an effort and cook something from scratch?

When taking food on the trail, the time and the amount of fuel it takes to cook it, and the weight of the food all comes into consideration.

At Tasmanian Hikes we mostly cook our meals from scratch. We can add or omit ingredients to suit our guests dietary requirements.

If you are not cooking for guests, the choice is yours.

We have researched some dehydrated meals that are available on the market and found that Strive Food is the brand of choice for taste and fulfillment.

You are going to need a stove and have to do the research on which one to buy to suit your style of cooking.

The Trangia stove is a trusted favourite, it comes as a kit with pots and the burner and requires no maintenance, however fuel consumption is not efficient.

MSR make a variety of cooking systems that are probably the most fuel efficient.

The MSR dragonfly is our stove of choice [although a bit noisy] but it will cook your meal quickly and efficiently.
A Photo Essay. The South Coast Track is a unforgettable walking experience that begins at a place us locals call "the end of the world" then it traverses east along the southern coastline of Tasmania for 9 days to Cockle Creek.

This photo essay of the South Coast Track will give you an insight of this incredible walk, the challenges you face and the beauty of one of Tasmania' "Great Walks".
Known as the Island of Inspiration,
Tasmania is renowned for its magnificent bushwalking tracks. With more than 20
percent of the island set aside as protected land, there are abundant
opportunities for scenic hikes through the countryside. These excursions range
from short, easy strolls to challenging wilderness treks that cover an array of
different environments, including white sandy beaches, ancient rainforests and
rugged mountainous terrain. Highly rated bushwalking tracks include Cradle
Mountain, Quamby Bluff and Liffey Falls. The Walls of Jerusalem, which is
situated in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, as well as the South
Coast and Arm River Tracks are also popular routes. Another impressive
excursion is the gentle four-day guided bushwalking tour of Maria Island.
Although you can fly to this World Heritage-listed national park, a trip aboard
the ferry Spirit of Tasmania is more economical, eco-friendly and closer to
nature.

The natural beauty of Maria Island is
the perfect backdrop for an up-close glimpse of the island’s fascinating
wildlife and plant species. The trek also introduces bushwalkers to Maria
Island’s aboriginal and European history. The Tyreddeme Aboriginal people
settled the island thousands of years before the 19th century arrival of
European explorers. Home to a penal colony older than Port Arthur, Maria Island
has hosted whalers, sealers and farmers. Today, it is a national park with no
permanent human population. Taking the shape of a figure eight, the larger
northern portion of the island is connected to the southern part by the
3-kilometer-long McRaes Isthmus. Each portion of the island has its own unique
geological features. In addition to 14 distinct terrestrial plant communities,
the animal inhabitants include red-necked wallabies, bare-nosed wombats and
Tasmanian kangaroos as well as rare and engendered bird species, such as the
Cape Barren geese. The clear waters offshore afford the opportunity to spot
dolphins, seals and migrating whales.

large tents for two nights and in converted penitentiary cells for one night.
Dine on gourmet meals under the stars featuring fresh local produce and
Tasmanian wine. Starting in Darlington, this guided outdoor adventure includes
the amazing Painted Cliffs, convict cells of Point Leseur and historic French’s
Farm. Stroll along the unspoiled sand of Haunted Bay, enjoy the vista from atop
Mount Maria and visit Oast House, one of the oldest buildings in Australia.
Tour other historic buildings, such as the former penitentiary. Built in the
1830s, the penal colony is now a World Heritage property. In addition to
experiencing the views of the Fossil Cliffs, bushwalkers have the option of
trekking up the slopes of Mount Bishop and Clerk.

A Tasmania walkabout with a
knowledgeable guide is a wonderful way to experience the island. Hikers,
walkers and other outdoor adventurers will discover why the four-day guided
trek through Maria Island National Park is regarded as one of Australia’s best
walking tours.

One of Tasmania's 60 Great Short Walks is the Dove Lake Circuit at Cradle Mountain.

This walk is best done in a clockwise direction, and it takes you beneath the towering spires of Cradle Mountain which is also the start of the famous Overland Track walk.

The walk is 5.7km long and it took us about 2 hours plus stops to complete.

We needed to make sure that we had adequate clothing as the weather can change quickly, as it did on this day with a few light snow showers.
Winter is a great time to get out and about and see our state, Tasmania.

We decided to drive to St Mary's from our place in Swansea and have a bit of a look around and chat to the locals.

One place that looked interesting was "Pings Place" in the high street. Pings Place is one of those interesting Knick Knack shops, where you will find almost anything that you may need at the last minute.

More interestingly, there was a Ping Pong table (nothing to do with the shop's name) slap bang in the middle of the shop and before long I was rallying with the store owner Juang for over 30 minutes. Best fun I had all day.

Feeling hungry we walked around the corner to the Purple Possum Cafe for a coffee and a snack. The Purple Possum has a great range of organic products, pastries, pies and cakes. The owner, Elaine and the staff where great. We even purchased an antique teapot from her collectables shop!

We will be going back really soon!

Winter is a fantastic time of the year for bush walking - mountains dusted with snow, lush vegetation and cooler walking conditions but there can also be many dangers associated with hiking at this time of the year.

In this article I'm going to cover some tips that you will need to know before you head off into the great outdoors this winter.

In the winter you will generally encounter higher rainfall and in alpine regions lots of snow. Under foot the conditions may be a bit more treacherous, so you will need to be a bit more careful where and how fast you walk.

1. Plan Ahead. Make sure that you have researched your walk and factor in a contingency day or two in case bad weather hampers your progress.

2. Check the weather. Are you a local to the area where you are going to walk? You could always do it another day!

3. Know your abilities and your limits. Have you walked or camped in adverse conditions before? Allow time for the unexpected.

4. Pack for the conditions. You will need 4 season gear, sufficient warm clothing, good wet weather gear and sturdy footwear.

5. Have a plan and tell a friend. Make sure that you leave with a friend, Park Ranger or Police a detailed itinerary of your walk, timings and next of kin.

6. Take emergency equipment. You should have a compass and a topographical map of the area that you are going to visit and know how to use them. Take with you a EPIRB [emergency position indicating response beacon] and/or a satellite phone. If you don't have these devices, they are able to be hired. Pack your personal phone as well, but coverage may be limited.

7. Have an emergency plan. In the event of an emergency you will need to know what to do. Always walk in a group of 3 or more and never leave a sick or injured person alone while someone gets help.
Remember our rule: "Less than 3 shall never be"

If you are not sure of your abilities or have the appropriate gear but want to experience some magical winter walks, consider a guided option in your state or territory.
Walking the Overland Track at any time of the year is a fantastic experience.

In April around Anzac day you have the "turning of the Fagus" where the green leaves of the Deciduous Beech Trees changes colour to red, orange and gold and it is only here in Tasmania that you will experience this.

From December to January is when the Alpine plant, the Mountain Rocket flowers, blooming from a white to a pale pink colour.

Happy Campers

Winter is a different experience to other seasons on the track as it is more tranquil and the trail is quieter.

The peaks and passes are often dusted with snow, lakes are frozen and the air is fresh and crisp.

To walk this alpine landscape in winter is an amazing experience and very photogenic.

At Adventure Seekers, in winter we run our tours a little different to summer. We utilize the huts instead of camping, or the more hardy can choose to camp if they wish.

We add an extra day to the tour as a contingency (7days) and move at a more leisurely pace as we shuffle along in our snowshoes through this magical landscape.

Winter tours run from the 21st July through to the 15th September 2014. You can book online here or just give us a call.
I met Maurice from Glowworm Bicycles in Tasmania this year and discovered that he distributes Ezee brand of Electric Bicycles throughout Australia.

As we talked I was immediately impressed about his road trip form Cape York to Sydney on an Ezee Electric Bike.

His epic journey got me thinking whether an electric bike would be suitable as a support vehicle on our Maria Island Guided Walk in Tasmania.

Currently we use a conventional mountain bike and Bob trailer as support to the tour in moving group gear and supplies a distance of 11km down the island.

I was pleased to know that there was a supplier of the Ezee Electric Bike in Hobart and duly went in to see Ahmet of Eco-Bikes to check the models out.

The idea of an electric bike seemed like a easier and more efficient way to move our gear but we were unsure whether it would stand up to the terrain on Maria Island. Finally we chose the Forza, rear wheel drive as the likely candidate and were eager to put it through its paces.

The attached video shows the type of terrain ranging from hard dirt to patches of soft sand which the Forza makes an easy meal of.

On average we do 2 trips to our base camp (33km) and then one return trip to our origin (11km) before we choose to recharge the 20A/h battery.

After 44km of riding, towing 30kg in the Bob trailer, 20kg on the rack plus the rider and a 15kg back pack we have 2 lights of power left on the controller. Average load = 140kg.

Modifications to the Forza are heavy duty pedals and puncture proof Schwalbe tyres.

After 500km of riding on the island the only problem that we had had with the Forza was a total power loss due to loosening connectors on the base of the battery (mainly due to the terrain). In summary we are very pleased with the Forza and the support from our supplier.

The site of Waldheim sits above Ronny Creek which is at the start of the Overland Track in Tasmania.

Gustav was a Botonist and a Guide. He had numerous guests to Waldheim between 1912 - 1932 and he thrived on guiding his guests around Cradle Mountain and interpreting the landscape for them.

Gustav was instumental in the pursuit of making Cradle Mountain and the area around it a National Park and subsequently in 1922 the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair Wildlife and Scenic Reserve was proclaimed. This year marks its 90th Anniverary.

Gustav's life was cut short by a heart condition in 1932 and he his buried at Waldheim, which looks over his much loved Cradle Mountain.

Adventure Seekers is running 2 Anniverary tours of the Overland Track on 17th & 24th December 2012 to commemorate Gustav Weindorfers contributon to preserving the environment that we are walking through.

You can choose to fly in a seaplane from Hobart, soaring over Lake St Clair, the Overland Track and Cradle Mountain and landing on a "secret" mountain lake or alternatively you will be transfered by shuttle bus to the start.

Our Western Arthur Traverse was over 10 days with the guided bushwalking company, Adventure Seekers. It was a truly spectacular walk passing by jagged peaks and beautiful lakes. Spectacular!

It was a early departure from Hobart to the start of the track at Scotts Peak as we planned to reach Lake Cygnus on Day 1.

From the top of the range above Moraine A the views were amazing. The reflection of Mount Rugby in Lake Pedder was serene. You could of sat there for hours, just looking in any which direction at this amazing landscape.

On day 3 we headed to High Moor. The track skirted around Lake Uranus (in picture) and sidled beneath Mt Capricorn. The weather was holding (just) and we arrived at High Moor, late afternoon in a shroud of mist and light rain.

At High Moor it was comforting to have the tent platforms, but nessasary to protect the fragile environment. Our walk from Promontory Lake to Lake Rosanne was predominately exposed ridge walking. The track headed south-east sidling below West Portal (the highest peak in the range). From the West Portal we followed a ridge line known as the Crags of Andromeda before dropping down steep gully to Lake Rosanne.

From Lake Rossane at the southern end of the range it was a 2 day 25km walk across the Arthur Plains back to Scotts Peak. We camped at Seven Mile Creek on our last night and we hit the sheets early as we had about 17km to cover on our last day. This walk was a fantastic experience made better by kind weather and good company.

Firstly, on the Overland Track you are required to camp in the designated camping areas and this means using the wooden tent platforms at each hut location (not at Waterfall Valley - use grass area).

The current anchor systems on the platforms make it difficult to secure your tent so we advise that using a free standing tent (ability to stand up by itself without the need for using tent lines) is more suitable and easier to pitch.

When you pitch your tent ensure that there are no overhanging tree branches above your tent as snow build up on the branches will eventually weigh the branches down and cause the snow to fall onto your tent in large clumps.

By using a 4 season tent, this will keep you a lot warmer. With a 4 season tent the outer fly generally touches the ground which keeps out the wind and snow pushing through. The inner mesh is also a lot thicker and windproof.

One disadvantage may be the the buildup of condensation on the inside of the tent. Most tents have a separate fly mesh that can be unzipped to allow air flow (adjust to suit). A good tip is to have a small chamois inside the tent to wipe up any condensation present. In winter conditions it is common that the top of your sleeping bag may feel slightly damp the next morning due to the condensation.

Weather conditions may not make it possible to dry your tent each day and you will have to pack it up wet. We suggest that you use a dry bag to store your tent in as not to get other gear inside your backpack wet.

Once you have pitched your tent at your next campsite use the chamois to dry the inside of your tent then lay down your bedding.Tasmanian Hikes Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07219297442563609471noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6556382222052092274.post-5426602607077126942012-03-11T17:55:00.000-07:002012-03-11T17:55:52.006-07:00Overland Track Shuttle ServicesGetting to the start as well as back from your Overland Track walk can be quite challenging.

I admit that the GPS is accurate and has some pretty whiz bang features but like all electronic devises things can go wrong with them, batteries go flat, you drop it, then it does work etc etc...

The map however is pretty straight forward. It doesn't require any batteries and it will keep on working 24/7. All you will need is to learn how to read one and study up on the use of a compass.

With your maps I suggest to get them laminated (sealed in a laminated pouch). It will last much longer (wear & tear) and will be impervious to rain. Most office supply shops provide this service or more popular maps come pre-laminated from specialist map shops.

Oh... I just about forgot to tell you that they weigh a lot less too!Tasmanian Hikes Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07219297442563609471noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6556382222052092274.post-52823192986583893502011-12-19T11:36:00.000-08:002011-12-19T11:36:20.119-08:00Why you should take a guided walk in Tasmania

Organising transport should be done in advance before booking your tours, and even if you are self guiding. Some services are limited by their frequency and timing.

Adventure Seekers based in Hobart may be your answer to get you or your group to walks such as the Overland Track, Walls of Jerusalem or Scott's Peak - the start of the Western Arthur Traverse and the Port Davey Track.

Generally if you are a group of at least 3 we can get you to the trailhead and back at a time and day that is convenient for you. A group of 5 or more will attract a discounted rate.
Maria Island is a National Park and a former probation station. A convict station was first established on the island in 1825 preceding the establishment of Port Arthur.
The convict era buildings are well preserved and were built by the convicts themselves.
Our day tour pieces together the past, talks about the 1st settlers of Maria and takes you to magical places like the Painted Cliffs and Skipping Ridge.
The walking is gentle, you'll see abundant wildlife such as Cape Barren Geese, Native Hens, Forester Kangaroos, Pademelons and Wombats. Tours leave Hobart daily November through to April.Tasmanian Hikes Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07219297442563609471noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6556382222052092274.post-19683064642754872732011-12-11T12:19:00.000-08:002011-12-11T12:19:43.875-08:00South Coast Track Guided Walk, Tasmania - 3rd December 2011

Our Par Avion flight from Hobart to Melaleuca was delayed 6 hours due to a slow moving cold front lingering in the west.
Finally after touching down around 4pm we set off on our guided walk towards Cox Bight and Point Eric.
A storm burst followed us into camp, which happened to be the last threat of rain that we would have until the evening of day 8.
The following morning it was a short beach walk to Black Cliff which you need to wade through the surf in order to continue.
It was here at Black Cliff where a sudden gust of wind picked up John's immaculately kept Akubra hat and tossed it into the Southern Ocean, never to be seen again.
Pressing on we soon arrived at the Louisa River camp, our springboard for the next days accent of the Ironbound Range. The formidable Ironbounds took us 12 hours and our views were limited but at least it didn't rain.
Day 4 was a rest day and we did exactly that. Numerous cups of tea, stoking the fire and an afternoon nap were in order.
Later that afternoon a walker rolled into camp after negotiating the Ironbounds. Little did we know but what he pulled out of his pack was the beginning of an amazing reunion for one of our clients.
Surprisingly in his hand was John's Akubra! What was once a well kept hat was now all puckered up and filled with the sands and sea life of Cox's Bight. John immediately washed it in the creek and started to dry it over the open fire then re-shaped it with a smile.
Prion Beach, Surprise Bay and Granite Beach where all picture perfect and the South Cape Range lived up to its reputation as a hard slog at the end of a great walk.
In the early evening of day 8 a stormed rolled into South Cape Rivulet, lightening and thunder cracked directly above us.
Showers continued through to the next morning as we set off through Blowhole Valley and the end of our walk at Cockle Creek.Tasmanian Hikes Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07219297442563609471noreply@blogger.com0
